The Art of Dip-Dyeing

"Tinto a immersione" — dyed by immersion, the Italian way.

A vintage touch of craftsmanship — perfected over generations by the master artisans of Tuscany.

The Process

At Calzoleria Toscana, our signature dip-dyeing process is a time-honored craft perfected by generations of Italian artisans.

Through more than 200 meticulous steps, premium leather is immersed in eco-friendly, vegetable-based dyes and carefully developed over time to achieve exceptional softness, rich depth of color, and distinctive character.

The result is leather with beautiful tonal variation and a unique vintage look. Once crafted into footwear, every pair reveals its own individual characteristics, ensuring that no two are exactly alike.

The Tannery

The Vegetable Dye Bath

Inside the Tuscan tannery, hides are placed into large steel drums with eco-friendly, vegetable-based dyes. This slow, meticulous process allows the color to penetrate deep into every fiber while giving the leather its signature softness and suppleness.

A Defining Step in the Process

The hides remain immersed in the vegetable-based dyes, allowing the color to penetrate deeply into the leather while developing its remarkable softness. They are then carefully hung to release any excess dye and create an even, beautifully balanced finish. This essential stage is closely monitored by experienced artisans whose knowledge and precision help define the quality and character of the finished hides.

Midway Through the Making

This image captures a dip-dyed shoe midway through its journey. The leather has already been dyed, cut, and stitched, revealing the rich tonal variation and unique vintage look created by the dip-dyeing process. At this stage, the upper has not yet been shaped over the last or given its final finishing touches. It is a rare look at the craftsmanship behind the shoe as it begins to take its final form.

Final Step

At the final stage, each pair is meticulously hand-burnished by our artisans. This finishing touch brings out the leather's rich tonal variation, distinctive vintage appearance, and unique characteristics, ensuring that no two pairs are exactly alike. The result is soft, supple leather that feels luxurious and comfortable from the very first wear.
